Variety description

The trifoliate orange is the most robust of the "hardy" citrus species for the north. This is due to its origin, the Himalayas, which is why it can be planted out without any problems. A little winter protection in the first 2-3 years helps to avoid unnecessary failures: once established no winter protection is necessary. It is interesting to note that the trifoliate orange is the only citrus plant that loses its leaves in autumn, after a very beautiful yellow, autumn splendour. At the same time, the wrinkly fruits turn yellow-orange. Anyone who comes across a fully-grown trifoliate orange in this state will be thrilled. Added to this is the almost bizarre-looking growth and the long thorns, which then become particularly prominent.
The flowering time of the trifoliate orange is from the end of April to the end of May. The flowers usually appear a little before or with the new shoots of the leaves. They are very large and fragrant - which conjures up a Mediterranean flair in the garden as early as May.
The fruits of the trifoliate orange are very sour, bitter and seedy. However, they can be made into jam.
