Vegetable breeding: breeding the outdoor tomato Open Sky Happy Black®

Vegetable breeding: breeding the outdoor tomato Open Sky Happy Black®

Tomatoes are a good example of how breeding vegetable varieties for the garden works. Breeding is actually easy, but it takes a lot of perseverance and above all continuity until you can finally bring a variety onto the market after six to ten years. In the following, I will briefly explain what is involved in our outdoor tomato breeding programme and how we specifically bred the Happy Black® variety.

Sugarbeauties® – the new ornamental sweet potatoes from Lubera Edibles

Sugarbeauties® – the new ornamental sweet potatoes from Lubera Edibles

When the Lubera® breeding team started breeding sweet potatoes a few years ago, the original and real focus was on improved, sweeter yielding varieties for hobby cultivation in the vegetable garden. During the selection work in the seedlings, however, we quickly noticed that the diversity in leaf colour and shape was quite large. Thus, it became clear relatively quickly that it was also worthwhile to select for these characteristics. This is what we did and we are just about to release the first...

Current breeding projects in Buchs - impressions of a photographer

How can you, I thought. But Markus " Merciless" Kobelt didn't let up: Yes, exactly, to invest 1-2 days with a photo shoot in the hottest August of all times (?) on the current breeding fields in Buchs, that was his latest job to me. Now I do like to take photos. But I prefer slightly overcast skies - of course just so that the photos turn out as good as possible, certainly not because of me... But what did I notice during the photo safari, armed with the camera and with the eyes of...

How successful are outdoor tomatoes on the market? – Sales test 2022

How successful are outdoor tomatoes on the market? – Sales test 2022

For some years now, when breeding new tomato varieties, we have concentrated on outdoor tomatoes that are largely resistant to blight and Alternaria. In discussions, we have heard time and again that the resistance argument is not important regarding tomatoes, that customers would focus on taste, on compact growth types or on diversity (colours, shapes, stripes). Sometimes even the suspicion was expressed that the building of tomato roofs, tomato houses and the like was just part of growing...

Lubera Edibles Podcast #11: Open Sky® Tomatoes – the outdoor tomato range

Lubera Edibles Podcast #11: Open Sky® Tomatoes – the outdoor tomato range

The tomato is probably the most popular vegetable in Germany, as can be seen from the constantly increasing demand and sales figures in the Lubera® online shop. Therefore it comes as no surprise that Lubera® has set up its own tomato breeding programme after a short planning phase. And the first varieties of this breeding effort will be offered starting in spring 2022 both on lubera.com as finished goods and at Lubera Edibles as young plants for all interested plant producers. Markus Kobelt...

Open Sky® Tomatoes – The Resistant Tomato Young Plants for Outdoors

By strictly selecting the healthiest plants, we have developed varieties that can be grown in the garden without further weather protection in Central Europe and they are also...

Sugaroots® – Sweet Potato Young Plants for Central Europe

Sugaroots® – Sweet Potato Young Plants for Central Europe

Hardly any vegetable is currently as trendy as the sweet potato. With an annual per capita consumption of around half a kilo, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is far from dominating the conventional potato (Solanum tuberosum), but the potential is there. In order to utilise this potential, at least in home gardens, we are launching the Sugaroots® sweet potato series for the 2022 spring season. These varieties were bred and selected by our partner company Lubera® in Switzerland.

Sweet potato breeding at Lubera

Sweet potatoes, Ipomoea batatas, are one of the most important crops internationally. In terms of yield, they rank number 15 among all crops, and among the root crops they are in 3rd place after potatoes and cassava. Their genetic origin and thus the place of greatest diversity is in subtropical to tropical Central America, but there are also genetic centres in South America (Peru) and in Polynesia, where the large tuberous roots stopped on their journey around the world. Exactly how sweet...

(Not) Just Peanuts® – the Lubera peanut assortment at a glance

Peanuts: everybody knows them and (almost) everybody has eaten them. What's new is that you can now grow your own peanuts, whether planted directly in your garden or in a container on a balcony or terrace. For this purpose, our sister company Lubera in Switzerland tested South American local breeds in comparison to common cultivars from the United States. The aim was to find a varied assortment of peanuts which are particularly suitable for our changing climate. The following varieties have...

FAQ about peanuts or what you always wanted to know about peanuts and never dared to ask

FAQ about peanuts or what you always wanted to know about peanuts and never dared to ask

Peanuts are a commodity: one eats them thoughtlessly in front of the television or while sitting on a barstool, hardly ever thinking about the plant or how to grow it. They are the epitome of industrial food. But peanuts, in particular the Lubera varieties, which can now be grown in northern regions, have a lot to offer: tasty nuts, which are actually beans, different seed coat colours ranging from white, pink and red to striped and black. In addition, there is also diversity in the growth...
