Variety description

'Desert King' is a summer fig that already ripens in July; it is extremely productive and shines with good winter hardiness. However, the figs are also green when ripe and thus inconspicuous. However, they are very juicy-sweet and score points with their unexpected red flesh.

The summer fig 'Desert King' sets tiny mini figs already in late autumn, which start to grow in the coming spring with the leaf shoots and therefore ripen already in July. The fruits develop parthenocarpically, i.e. without fertilisation.
'Desert King' is a very vigorous but somewhat sparse fig variety. Despite its good winter hardiness, figs north of the Alps should be grown with multiple shoots so that frost-related failure of entire shoots has a less effect. In addition, plant the figs deep enough in order to encourage the growth of new shoots. Be careful with winter pruning: only cut back every 3rd or 4th shoot tip, otherwise you will cut away too many fruit buds.
