Variety description

The kiwi variety 'Hayward' is the standard female variety among the large-fruited kiwis (Actinidia deliciosa). Provided it is pollinated, the variety produces regular, high yields. Its large fruits are typically slightly cylindrical, which can be seen particularly well in cross-section. The flesh is light green, juicy and tastes both sweet and sour. As a very strong and spreading climber, up to 4-7 m tall, the female kiwi 'Hayward', like all kiwis, needs a sturdy climbing support, which should not be too short. For high yields, 'Hayward' also needs a male pollinator nearby. In the first 2-3 years, light winter protection is recommended. Summer pruning (June-July) is very important. This involves cutting back the long, sometimes massively sprawling, one-year-old shoots to within a few eyes of the fruit set. Summer pruning is important for flowering in the following year and, in contrast to winter pruning, which is also important, it weakens growth.
