Variety description

The Japanese wineberry is not a blackberry, but a separate species (Rubus phoenicolasius), which grows slightly arched like a classic blackberry. It is strong and looks a bit "bristly" with its many fine spines. Although this mysterious exotic has been known for a long time, the Japanese grape berry is only seen sporadically. It is best trained on a trellis, where the 2 - 3 m long, purple shoots are tied up. This is important because canes lying on the ground take root quickly. Like the blackberries, the Japanese wineberry is self-fertile. The fruits are rather small, but aromatic and rich in vitamins.
