Variety description

The black mulberry Bombyx® ‘Black Bombastic’ is arguably the largest-fruited mulberry in the range. The violet-black fruits reach a size of up to 12 cm. When fully ripe, the entire fruit is violet-black in colour and tastes, as is typical of mulberries, sugar-sweet without any acidity. The ripening period of Bombyx® ‘Black Bombastic’ begins relatively late, in mid-July, but extends until the end of August.

The plants of the black mulberry Bombyx® ‘Black Bombastic’ are comparatively vigorous growers but also have good natural branching. As a result, Bombyx® ‘Black Bombastic’ forms beautiful, dense shrubs with a final height of up to 4 m. However, with regular pruning, the final height can be limited quite effectively to under 3 m.

Just like the red-fruited Bombyx® ‘Shades of Red’ and the white-fruited Bombyx® ‘Sugarsweet’, Bombyx® ‘Black Bombastic’ is also a descendant of Morus alba and is therefore relatively hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -15°C.
