Fact sheet

Growth: Broad, upright growth; even when grown as an annual, ‘Nova’ reaches up to 2 m wide and the same height

Ripeness/Harvest: the berries ripen in stages but over a period of 4 weeks, from the end of August

Fruits: normal-sized, black-brown berries on very large flower umbels; the flowers and berries can be used in the same way as those of black elder

Taste: On the one hand, it has the typical elderberry flavour, but on the other, it is noticeably milder; this is particularly true of the processed berries. The flowers have a slightly less intense fragrance, and once processed, the difference from native elderberry is barely noticeable

Variety description

With the Howunder® ‘Nova’ garden elderberry, we are expanding our elderberry range to include another partially self-fertile garden elderberry variety from the North American elderberry group (Sambucus canadensis). However, planting an additional Howunder® variety can increase the yield of both varieties, as the individual Howunder® varieties cross-pollinate with one another. Howunder® ‘Nova’ is also characterised by its very large flower umbels, which are typical of all Howunder® garden elderberries. The flowers of Howunder® ‘Nova’ can be used in the same way as those of the native black elderberry, but have a slightly less intense fragrance. The final product, however, tastes almost identical.

If not all the flowers have been used, the berries ripen over a period of about four weeks, starting from the end of August. You should, however, hurry with the harvest, as winged insects in particular are also very keen on the ripe berries. The ripe fruits are a blackish-brown colour and are the same size as those of the black elder, but have a slightly milder flavour. Once processed, however, there is no longer any significant difference in taste.
