Variety description

The OpenSky® ‘Gigantalis’ variety is not, in fact, a typical tomatillo. The large, pale cream-coloured fruits with their tapered shape differ significantly from the usual round, greenish-purple tomatillo fruits. What they do have in common is the papery husk that surrounds the fruits, which bursts open when fully ripe to release the fruit. 

In terms of flavour, OpenSky® ‘Gigantalis’ is fruity and sweet, with the distinctive aroma of a tomatillo, which is slightly spicier and more intense than that of a Cape gooseberry. Depending on their degree of ripeness, the fruits of OpenSky® ‘Gigantalis’ can taste slightly sweeter or slightly more tart, but are always spicier than a classic physalis. It is also slightly sweeter and fruitier than a conventional tomatillo.

As a plant, OpenSky® ‘Gigantalis’ grows vigorously and bushy, reaching a height of up to 150 cm. The first ripe fruits appear in July, and the ripening period continues into October.
