Variety description

The twisted trifoliate orange is as robust as the natural form of the bitter orange (Poncirus trifoliata). In contrast to it, however, the shoots are also twisted like corkscrews. Even with the quirky variety 'Flying Dragon', some winter protection is indicated in the first 2-3 years in order to avoid unnecessary failures. Once established, cold protection is no longer necessary.
The corkscrew shape gives this special ornamental variety a fascinating appearance. This is the case in the spring at flowering time - end of April to end of May - since the large, white flowers usually appear slightly before the new leaves sprout. After budding, the bizarre scaffolding recedes somewhat into the background. A second visual highlight occurs in autumn. Like the natural form, the twisted trifoliate orange also loses its leaves in autumn, after a fantastic yellow autumn splendour. At the same time, the wrinkly fruits turn yellow-orange. Anyone who encounters the 'Flying Dragon' variety in this state will be delighted. The fruits of the trifoliate orange are very sour, bitter and seedy. However, they can be made into jam.
