Variety description

The flowering hazel fascinates with its dark red sprouting of the leaves, which hardly green up in the summer even in shady locations. The foliage says goodbye in October with a beautiful autumn colour. In other words, it is an ornamental and wild fruit in one and produces reddish brown, edible nuts in September.

Like all hazels, the hazel 'Purpurea' grows broadly bushy. However, the vigour is somewhat less than that of the green-leaved varieties. The hazel 'Purpurea' is suitable as a single ornamental shrub, but also for hedges or in groups with other wild fruit. As shallow rooters, all hazels can secure terrain, for example embankments and slopes.
