Variety description

Hardly any other plant has such a long tradition in Bamberg as true liquorice, also known as the liquorice plant. For over three hundred years, Bamberg was one of the major European centres for liquorice cultivation. It was only with the advent of the sugar beet that its economic importance declined. This already gives an indication of what liquorice was used for – and is still used for today. An intensely sweet-tasting juice is extracted from the roots, which can be used to sweeten a wide variety of foods and drinks. In earlier times, dried roots were also chewed whole, as a sort of precursor to chewing gum. When the juice is boiled down, it thickens and becomes viscous – this forms the basis for liquorice production. But liquorice has also been known as a medicinal plant since ancient times. This led to its selection as the Medicinal Plant of the Year 2012.

And if you leave the plant to grow undisturbed rather than harvesting it, liquorice is also a welcome addition to any garden. Whether in a perennial bed, a vegetable patch, a medicinal herb garden or a cottage garden. Liquorice plants flower late in the year – the first blooms do not appear until August. At a time when not much else is in bloom in the garden, the striking violet-white flowers attract countless insects.
