Variety description

The Saskatoon berry 'Thiessen' is an important standard variety in commercial cultivation. It is the result of a selection from a wild variety found at the beginning of the 20th century. It is interesting to note that the fruit size - together with the variety 'Martin' - is still the benchmark for Saskatoon berries. The fruits are sweet, juicy and ripen only slightly.
While in the ornamental garden Amelanchier is often used as a solitary tree to emphasise the elegant, beautiful wood, the shrubs should be kept vigorous from the 4th year of growth onwards by eliminating the oldest shoots. This prevents them from becoming bare at the bottom over time.
