Variety description

Wild leek - sometimes also called broadleaf wild leek - is the original form of today's vegetable leek. This close relationship is also reflected in the appearance of the plant; the foliage is very reminiscent of the vegetable leek. The difference is that wild leek forms a small bulb that is also edible and has a pleasantly mild garlic flavour. The foliage of wild leek is used in the kitchen in the same way as vegetable leek and also has a fairly similar taste.

The big difference between the original and the cultivated form is the perennial nature of the plants. The wild leek grows as a wintergreen or evergreen and perennial plant. In the second half of the summer, the plant goes dormant for a short time and starts growing again in the autumn. With the newly formed foliage, the plant eventually overwinters and starts growing again in the spring.
