Variety description

German garlic is a perennial Allium species that is native to Europe. With its ornamental but also its useful value, the German garlic or broadleaf chives, as it is also known, is a real enrichment for every garden. Due to its natural distribution in the alpine region up to an altitude of over 2,000 m, the German garlic is also suitable for dry, stony and meagre locations and forms really handsome clumps there over the years.

It is mainly the narrow leaves of the German garlic that are eaten. However the beautiful purple flowers are also edible. The leaves have a mild onion flavour with a slight hint of garlic. The flowers taste pleasantly sweet with a good onion note.

Because of the late flowering time in the second half of summer, the German garlic is also interesting as a bee pasture. Then, when there is little flowering left in the gardens, the flowers of the German garlic shine in a strong pink-purple colour.
