Variety description

The artichoke originates from the Mediterranean region and was once reserved for the rich. The edible flower base is very small in relation to the entire plant, without any nutrients worth mentioning, but just special, tart, different. The entire flower is harvested as soon as the outermost scales open slightly.

The variety 'Colorado Red Star' is the beauty among cultivated artichokes. Its flower buds are violet-red and it is worth not harvesting all the flower buds in order to enjoy the beauty of the plant. 'Colorado Red Star' is often grown as an annual only. This is because it reliably produces flowers already in the first year. This variety grows more quickly and becomes less tall than others. This means that it can also be planted in locations where others would no longer flower. Although 'Colorado Red Star' - as one of the few varieties - is suitable for annual cultivation, we think it is a pity not to cultivate it perennially. It does not need more winter protection than the other varieties and once artichokes are established, they form clumps and the yield increases. However, after 5 - 7 years, replanting may be necessary.
